a good time for bad things

One is enriched through unfortunate events.
No blame, if you are sincere
And walk in the middle,
And report with a seal to the prince.

A time of blessing and enrichment has such powerful effects that even events
ordinarily unfortunate must turn out to the advantage of those affected by
them. These persons become free of error, and by acting in harmony with
truth they gain such inner authority that they exert influence as if sanctioned
by the letter and seal.

last day in san francisco

I'll be heading out tonight, getting back into Detroit at 5:00am.

the time in SF has been really great. The city is really interesting, and far larger than I had given in credit for previously. Expensive though, its like NYC, worse in some ways. Gaming is huge here. Clubs are great, lots of good people. I'll be visiting here more often.

in more interesting news, a viking/pagan metal show that promises to be even more awesome than paganfest lurks on the horizon:

twilight of the thunder god

I'll probably try to be at more than one of these dates in Oct.

also:

Heathen Crusade in November. I havent been this excited about shows in years.

the adventure cycle continues

I stayed in richmond after the virginia beach convention for a few more days of training with Moy Tung. last wednesday I returned, and friday morning I left again with Andrew for NYC. We got to chinatown just in time to meet up with a few others and hit the evening class/lecture there. Afterward wasthe traditional chinatown dinner, the pool andcarousing with old kungfu guys until dawn.
Saturday we woke up around 2:00pm and went down the brooklyn school for another session with MT. Afterward we hung out in williamsburg all night. Probably the best time I've ever had there. we were out till dawn again I'm pretty sure. Sunday was pretty low-key, but we left at about 11:30pm and drove all night to get back here. I'm passing out now, I'll do evening class, then I'm going to see batman.

wednesday I'm leaving for a week in san francisco.

the calm before the storm

Iowa was a good time. Very relaxing. mostly spent with old friends and family. My sisters child in 3 and its a lot of fun to be a crazy uncle.

quite interestingly I raninto several old mentors and teachers when I wasiniowa, who were very willing to discuss ideas and compare notes about my formative years.

My bus back from iowa was oversold, and I was left standing on the curb at 2:00am. The next bus wouldnt have gotten me back to Detroit in time for the birthday barbeque in my honor.

My old friend Herb just happened to be driving by and asked if i needed a ride home. He had a few days off so we left immediately and he drove the whole 8 hours.
The barbeque was great, I've gotten a lot of good stuff.

Officially over the hill now. I'm very much feeling a new beginning going into 31.

Now tomorrow we're leaving for VA Beach and the most signifigant kung fu event that has happened since the death of moy yat.

should be back next week. then off to san francisco for a week. then back briefly before more NYC adventures.

No one knew it, but the fiddler standing against a bare wall outside the Metro in an indoor arcade at the top of the escalators was one of the finest classical musicians in the world, playing some of the most elegant music ever written on one of the most valuable violins ever made. His performance was arranged by The Washington Post as an experiment in context, perception and priorities -- as well as an unblinking assessment of public taste: In a banal setting at an inconvenient time, would beauty transcend?

the middle way for action.

Bearing with the uncultured in gentleness,
Fording the river with resolution,
Not neglecting what is distant,
Not regarding one's companions:
Thus one may manage to walk in the middle.

In times of prosperity it is important and above all to possess enough
greatness of soul to bear with imperfect people. For in the hands of a great
master no material is unproductive; he can find use for everything. But this
generosity is by no means laxity or weakness. It is during times of prosperity
especially that we must always be ready to risk even dangerous undertakings,
such as the crossing of a river, if they are necessary. So too we must not
neglect what is distant but must attend scrupulously to everything.
Factionalism and the dominance of cliques are especially to be avoided. Even
if people of like mind come forward together, they ought not to form a faction
by holding together for mutual advantage; instead, each man should do is
duty. Theses are four ways in which one can overcome the hidden danger of
a gradual slackening that always lurks in any time of peace. And that is how
one finds the middle way for action.

that show was amazing. Clutch cargos was sold out, and the crowd was so full of unabashed geekery i couldnt believe it. The band is of course really good, a bunch of fat old geeks themselves, and totally rocking out. Its like a bunch of old guys quite their cubicle jobs and became rockstars.
The coolest thing is that just about the entire crowds was singing along with certain songs, most noteably "Murmaider" which I think ended up being the high point of the show.

so heres a video of "murmaider" from the atlanta show, the cool thing is the video in the background. At the detroit show everyone in the crowd was singing the chorus parts, it was awesome.

<lj-embed id="9" />

Power

Nothing in the world can take the place of Persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan 'Press On' has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.
-Calvin Coolidge

I think if Confuscius had ever chosen a president for the united states it would have been this guy.

I dont think we'll get too far west though, because he's got to be back in NYC for the 28th, i may or may not head back east with him.

Moy Tung left rather abruptly last night. He had planned on staying through the week and doing some private lessons with people, but plans changed. It is highly likely that he'll come through in the next week or two to follow up on those lessons.

This seminar was about half the number of people I had originally estimated, yet everything went very smoothly. I attribute this to the growing seniority of the Detroit student base and the overall dedication of the participants.
